newcompany claimconfirmed Stated reactor basis: HTGR design principles with TRISO fuel, graphite moderator, helium coolant
Valar's homepage says its reactor uses high-temperature gas reactor (HTGR) design principles and lists TRISO fuel, a graphite moderator and helium coolant. The technology page names the architecture 'Numenor' and says HTGRs are optimized for high-grade process heat for industrial and chemical uses. The company claims an 'unmatched' safety profile and proliferation resistance for HTGR plus TRISO; that is a company claim, and neither page gives power ratings, temperatures or enrichment. HTGR and TRISO are decades-old concepts, which the company itself acknowledges ('Advanced nuclear designs have been around for decades').
In plain termsValar's reactor is a gas-cooled type: helium gas carries the heat away, graphite slows the neutrons, and the uranium sits inside tiny coated beads called TRISO (see the TRISO explainer). The type is decades old, as the company's own site says. 'Unmatched' safety is the company's word, not a regulator's finding.
