Fact orig-022

newrecordconfirmed Name and naming: 'Valar' is from Tolkien; the 'Ward' reactors honor the founder's Manhattan Project ancestor
undated · orig-022 · Valar Atomics, Isaiah Taylor

Contrary Research, an investor, says the company name comes from J.R.R. Tolkien's mythology, and that the Ward Zero and Ward One names honor the founder's great-grandfather, who worked on the Manhattan Project. Valar's own April 2025 post says Ward One is named after that relative, whom the founder describes as having worked at Oak Ridge's X-10 reactor. TechCrunch described the ancestor as a grandfather and 'a nuclear physicist'; the company's own account says great-grandfather. The relative is not named here (people rule). The other Tolkien names (Numenor, Valarin, Windlord) and the 'Ward 250' birthday name are in orig-069.

In plain termsThe company's name comes from The Lord of the Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien: in his stories the Valar are the powers who shaped the world. The 'Ward' reactors are named, the company says, for the founder's relative who worked on the Manhattan Project. The other Tolkien names are explained in orig-069.
verified 2026-09-29: Verify pass 2 (2026-09-29): Valar post (great-grandfather, X-10), Contrary (Tolkien; great-grandfather; Ward naming) and TechCrunch ('grandfather ... a nuclear physicist') re-read; all match. Relative stays unnamed.
