Fact orig-023

newanalysisconfirmed Stated operating temperatures vary by source: 'up to 900 C', 'above 750 C', 'in excess of 950 C'
undated · orig-023 · Valar Atomics

Published temperature claims for Valar's HTGR differ. TechCrunch (Feb 2025) reported up to 900 C; Valar's own August 2025 post claims operating temperatures above 750 C; Contrary Research (Nov 2025) says in excess of 950 C. None of these sources gives a measured Ward 250 outlet temperature, and the Ward 250 test reactor runs at about 100 kWt (per Taylor). The figures are design targets or characterizations, not demonstrated operating data. The high temperature matters because the company's hydrogen plan relies on the sulfur-iodine cycle, whose hottest step needs roughly 800-1000 C per the Contrary report. An investor, Initialized Capital (February 2025), went further and wrote that Ward One 'operates at 900°C', although Ward One had not been built (orig-064).

In plain termsHow hot the reactor can run matters because very high heat is needed to make hydrogen cheaply. The figures Valar and others have published differ (750, 900, 950 degrees C) and none is a measured result. Valar's own safety paper lists 650 degrees C as the normal outlet temperature and 750 as a goal (orig-040).
verified 2026-09-29: Verify pass 2 (2026-09-29): TechCrunch (900 C), Valar's post (>750 C) and Contrary ('in excess of 950º C'; S-I step 800-1000 C) re-read. Added the investor's 'operates at 900°C' claim for an unbuilt reactor; plain now gives both NSDA temperatures.
